I think the background is fine, if you made it more detailed it would take attention away from the focal point. One thing going on here is the bird and flower need to be unified a little better. It would help if their were flowers or leaves off the branch he was on "leading" into the flower to make the focal point more powerful.

I think you may benefit from some composition study - work out the shapes beforehand and you'll come up with more powerful ways to utilize the objects and negative space in the work.
