I think the background is fine, if you made it more detailed it would take attention away from the focal point. One thing going on here is the bird and flower need to be unified a little better. It would help if their were flowers or leaves off the branch he was on "leading" into the flower to make the focal point more powerful.

This is adorable, great job. It would honestly be more effective with a background and the rest of the torso completed, but I understand it's a sketch.

No it's finished, but this is a commission, which didn't have a background :)

[Stairs]

This is a really good study, you should be proud of it. I'd work on getting those lines straighter, due to the "swoosh" thing going on in the light on the stairs.
